Downtown Charleston Neighborhoods

"South of Broad" is the most exclusive area of downtown.  It is a must see for tourist and there have been several books written about this area.  Prices range from $435,000.00 for a condominium to twenty three million for a magnificent historical home.
French Quarter is a section of downtown bounded by the Cooper River on the East, Broad Street on the South, Meeting Street on the West and Market Street on the North.  The name recognizes the high concentration of French merchants in the area's history. Charleston's fabulous Waterfront Park is located within the French Quarter and some of the cities finest art galleries.  Mostly condominium living in this area with prices from $379,000 up to $4,000,000.00 and above.

Ansonborough is a section of downtown that is close to restaurants & shopping.  The Harris Teeter, Vegetable Bin and Ted's Butcherblock featuring international meats & cuisine are located within walking distance on East Bay Street.  Dockside is a condominium building that has 18 floors and is located right on the harbor.  Each residence has a boat slip.  Lauren's House and Anson House are also condominiums located on the water and near the SC Aquarium.  Seven Calhoun is a new development located next door to Charleston's newest commercial building at 25 Calhoun.  Seven Calhoun will feature a four star luxury hotel and forty-seven residences.  It will be anchored to the new Concord Park, which will be the size of Marion Square but trimmed out like Water Front Park.  Construction of the park will begin January 2013.  The Charlotte Street park is almost completed.  It is a tribute to the Irish and I can't wait to see it.  This is a very exciting area for all of the changes slated and or currently taking place.  Currently there are available listings priced from $450,000 to $2,800,000.00.

According to the Radcliffeborough's neighborhood association site, it began as farmland purchased and surveyed by Thomas Radcliffe in 1786. Thomas’ estate and his widow, Lucretia continued to develop the borough after Thomas was lost at sea in 1806.
In 1811, the Third Episcopal Church was built on four lots donated by Mrs. Radcliffe for this purpose. St. Paul’s convenient local and grand appearance attracted rice planters from the neck to worship alongside homes built by merchants and mechanics.  Today, Radcliffeborough is as racially and economically mixed as it was then but its boundaries have grown from its original eight blocks to span from King Street to Ashley Avenue and from Bee Street, to Calhoun.
Homes range from $280,000 for a two bedroom to upward of 2.2 million.  This area is popular with doctors and medical students due to its close proximity to MUSC as well as shopping & on dining on Upper King Street.

Harelston Village is located within the boundaries of King, Lockwood, Broad, and Calhoun Street.  It has Colonial Park which is a local favorite.  Harelston is situated on the site of the first golf club in America.  Home prices range from $235,000 for a single family attached to $2,400,000.00 and above.  This is p
rimarily a residential neighborhood, however it does feature one of Charleston’s most highly rated hotels and restaurants at the Wentworth Mansion at 149 Wentworth Street.

Cannonborough-Elliotborough were originally two separate boroughs however are now considered one.
Fondly known as "The Gateway to the Peninsula," this area is undergoing revitalization that is supported by the city and community.  There are several great restaurants such as Trattoria Lucca, Fuel Cantina, Five Loaves, and many more.
Currently prices range from $179,000 through $1,700,000

Wagener Terrace is a section of downtown that is located along the marshes of the Ashley River, Hampton Park, and The Citadel.  One of my favorites is Longborough Charleston's newest old neighborhood. Army Wives just filmed on location of one of the residences in Longborough.  Young professionals tend to flock to this area, it is close to everything downtown however has a true neighborhood feel and is affordable.  Currently you can purchase a three bedroom town home for $150,000 and prices for a single family home can go up to $789,000.00 and above.
